What a difference a race makes at the Irish Fireball Open.

Justin Maguire & Francis Rowan won first Irish Fireball Championship of the season at the 2004 Fireball Open hosted by Skerries Sailing Club on the 8/9 May. The final result which was ultimately decided on count back gave Rowan the championship over his last season partner of Will Moody who was crewed by Stephen Gill. Mick Creighton and Peter Levins finish third after being denied overall victory when the last race which they had won was thrown out by the protest committee.

Maguire & Rowan who finished 8th in the final race logged a protest seeking redress for the manner in which the race was shortened. On consideration of the protest the committee felt they had no option but to discard the race shaking up the final results completely. The difference the race made to the overall results was quite stricking as the event had been very tight. Maguire & Rowan moved from 4th to 1st while Creighton moved from first to third demoting Neil Spain & Mathew Threadwell from third to sixth overall as they too had finish well with a second position in the last race.

Skerries, a popular venue for the Fireball fleet, with strong winds etched in the minds seemed to promise more of the same as boats rigged on Saturday morning in the whistling winds. But by the time the boats had reach the race course the condition had settle down to what was to be a light weathered event. With the OOD setting longer start lines than usual the fleet was faced with big trade off's between tide an line bias which many struggled with. Maguire in his first championship laid down his marker by taking the bullet in the first race followed home by Clontarfs Brackan & O'Hara with Spain & Threadwell third. Race 2 saw Laser 2 World Champion Stephen Campion helming for Sarah Donaghy lead the fleet around the course for the first lap but lost there way in dramatic fashion to finish 15th. Moody, last years Fireball Traveller Trophy winner with Rowan took the race follow home by Creighton and Spain.

Race 3 saw Neil Colin & Margaret Casey from the DMYC who had shown well in the first two races hold their position to take the bullet followed home by two World Champions, that was Noel Bulter crewed by Graham Elmes in second with Campion and Donaghy in third. This left Moody, Colin, and Bulter on the top of the leader board overnight but with 7 boats all within points of each other everything was to play for.

After early mist and rain cleared Sunday racing began in similar but flatter conditions than the previous day. Campion & Donaghy led from the start with an unchallanged port tack start from the pin end while much of the fleet had chosen the other end for a more tidal to start. Though pressed hard throughout by Creighton & Levins held on to take the race by a foot calling water at the pin end of the line to squezze in. Meanwhile Maguire Rowan held Moody & Gill at bay to take third which was to prove the decider as the fifth race though run was not to count.

In the Gold 2 Fleet Peter & Michael Keegan took honors by a single point ahead of Ian O'Gorman and Stephan Oram, with John Walsh and Niamh O'Rourke third. In the Silver fleet newcomer Cariosa Power and Marie Barry where very happy with their first outing in a borrowed Fireball for the weekend as they took home the glassware ahead of Brendan Hughes and David Fitzpatrick from Clontarf.

At the presentations thanks was expressed to Will Moody for key organisation of 3 full coaching weekend held already this year in Dublin & Killaoe which has been was a big factor in getting so many boats out (26 in all ) for the first event of the season. Thanks also to Skerries Sailing Club for another great event both on and off the water. The fleet heads North to Carlingford Lough Yacht Club on the 22/23 May.
