IFAV Traveller's Trophy 2021 Final Results

10 April 2021

Congratulations to our Victorian State Fireball Traveller's Trophy winners for 2020-2021 season:

Phil Peverell and Bruce Shand in "The Grey Ghost" AUS15027.

The season start was delayed until Feb 2021 due to COVID so the events were compacted into the Feb - early April time frame. Fireballs competed at 5 regattas across this period. Phil and Bruce competed in 4 of the 5 events and were amongst the top few at each event. Despite very strong finishes by Myles Gavin and Ben O'Brien in "Hot Wire" AUS14608 and Brendan Garner in "Return of the Jedi" AUS14572 the consistency shown by Phil and Bruce across the season proved too much of a challenge.

                                                            Congrats Phil and Bruce

27 - 28th Feb 2021: IFAV State Titles at Cairn Curran Sailing Club

IFAV 2021 State titles tight racing

  • Cairn Curran provided an outstanding welcome to the Fireball and Finn fleets, complete with a COVID sensitive serving of food led by Lorraine Thompson. Breezes from the North provided challenging shifts and very tight racing. There were 4 race winners across the 6 races held.  Results

13 - 14th Mar 2021: Symmetrical Spinaker Regatta at Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club. No participants

27 Mar 2021: Royal Geelong Yacht Club  Fireball Invitation Club racing at the home of the next Australian Fireball World Championship. Results

  • Eight boats headed into Corio Bay in a strong, gusting westerly. Just before the start a big shift to the SW with stronger pressure created a challenge. Phil Peverell / Bruce Shand made the most of the shift and led round mark 1. Wind shifts weren't over yet. In the next 2 legs the pressure dropped to a light 6 - 10 knot SE breeze. Phil / Bruce maintained their lead but Brendan Garner sailing with Nathan Field closed the gap by keeping to the south side of the 3rd leg. Shifts and pressure changes continued and Myles Gavin / Ben O'Brien led around the top mark 2nd time around by being the right most boat on the beat. With pressure rising they high-wired down the run keeping to the stronger pressure on the south (right) side of the course downwind to lead the fleet across the finish line. Results

2nd - 5th Apr 2021: Western Region Easter Regatta at Lake Bullen Merri.

  • Great temperatures and good breezes provided the fleet of more than 70 boats an excellent easter regatta. Camping by the lake was full with all the participants and their families. Follow this link for the full story of fun and racing experienced by then participating fireballs! Results
